Are you looking to get started on your print on demand journey but not sure how to come up with design ideas, and what tools and resources to use to get those designs?

In this article we cover several great ways to get design inspiration, and list some of the best tools and resources to bring those ideas to life.

So, if you’re ready to get inspired and start creating some winning designs, read on.

Print on demand designs:

Brainstorm & validate

This may seem obvious, but so many people just dive into existing niches that could be very competitive already.

Spend some time simply putting pen to paper, write down all the things you like to do, you’re career, you’re industry, what you’re studying, what’s your favorite foods, hobbies, places you love, what sports you play, etc.

Then think about friends and family, ask yourself the same questions about them – sports, jobs, study topic, etc., write everything down.

Get down as many ideas as you possibly can.

Once you’ve got a bunch of solid ideas and niches, you need to validate them to see if they’re actually worth pursuing.

Here’s some ways to do that:

  • Check if people are selling in that niche – if they are then that’s a good sign there’s demand
  • Check if the interest is growing via Google Trends
  • eRank – Etsy keyword volume and competition data
  • Podly.co – Amazon sales intel
  • Merch Informer – niche research
  • Manually search on POD sites & Etsy
  • Social media interest for a niche – e.g. Pinterest boards, Facebook groups, Instagram pages, etc. – if so, this is also a good sign

Once you’ve validated you chosen niche or sub-niche it’s time to get some design ideas and inspiration.

Print on demand design ideas, inspiration, and research

Before you start creating print on demand designs you’re obviously going to need to get some ideas and inspiration first.

Here are a few of the best ways to help you figure out and prioritize what designs to create:

Print on demand sites homepages

One of the easiest ways to start your journey into print on demand is to simply upload your designs to popular print on demand sites that have an existing audience that you can tap into.

Some of the top print on demand sites are:

  • Merch By Amazon
  • Redubble
  • Zazzle
  • Teepublic
  • Society6
  • Threadless

If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration for your designs, these websites are great starting point for your ideation and research.

Juna from Detour Shirts explains why…

Juna from Detour Shirts

“My biggest tip is to study the Print on Demand site you are trying to sell in. What kind of topics do well or what ones are they pushing on their home page.

Try to get a sense of the styles you see being promoted by the site. Then niche down to a more specific topic.

For example if you see the topic of cats as a popular topic you may want to do a more specific cat or a cat doing a certain activity. Brainstorm and sketch out ideas and create something new and original for that sub niche.”

Note: If you’re new to Print on Demand check out Juna’s video on what to do before starting Print on Demand.

Here’s a video from Juna showing you how to find print on demand niche trends for free:

Etsy

There are a few ways you can use Etsy to get design ideas:

Manually:

Manually spend some time discovering what designs are selling within that niche:

  • Start with broad search in your chosen niche
  • Look for listings that have a ‘Bestseller’ tag as these are products that will have had good sale amounts in the previous 6 months
  • You can sort my ‘top custom reviews’ too, and this will typically put listings to the top that have a lot of reviews (meaning they’ve had a lot of sales), and plenty of positive reviews as well
  • Save a bunch of the best sellers and popular listings and then look for common themes
    • E.g. styles, fonts, font combinations, phrases, graphics, layouts, etc.

Use Etsy research tools:

You can use Etsy research tools to speed up this process. They have product research tools that give you estimates on the amount of sales products are getting.

Here are some of the best tools:

Hannah Ebeling is a successful print on demand seller on Etsy, and recommends using Sale Samurai, as well as offering up some other great tips on where to get design inspiration…

Hannah Ebeling

“The formula for finding a profitable designs truly is just pinpointing niches with high-demand and low-competition.

I rely on a combination of free methods and paid research tools to find my product inspiration.

The tools Merch Informer and Sale Samurai have been invaluable for me to find bestselling niches quickly and easily, but I also like to keep an eye on social media and Google trends for emerging niches and ideas.

While the majority of my products are things I might not personally be interested in, when inspiration strikes me with something I’m passionate about or love to make, I don’t shy away from that either.”

Note: Check out this Sale Samurai tutorial from Hannah.

Here’s a video from Hannah showing you how to find profitable niches:

Merch Informer

Mech Informer is a goldmine when it comes to design research and inspiration, particularly for those of you who plan to sell on Merch By Amazon.

They have tools that help you quickly identify top selling products, trending designs and niches, get inspiration from Pinterest and Etsy, and so much more.

Google Trends

A free and easy way to get some design inspiration (and get into the heads of your potential customers) is to use Google Trends.

Not only does it allow you to look at the trends for specific topics (so you can find niches growing in popularity or know when to release seasonal-focused designs) it also gives you related topics and searches that can help inspire new design ideas.

For example, a quick search for ‘dad shirts’ brings up some related topics that could be worth pursuing:

  • fathers day shirt for dad and son
  • dad joke shirt
  • funny dad shirts from daughter
  • etc.

Google has some other tools you can use for free to get some design inspiration:

  • Google Keyword Planner – get search volume data and related search queries
  • Google alerts – create alerts for specific topics and get trending news sent to your inbox that you can use to inspire your latest designs

Social Media

Monitor social media for design ideas within your chosen niche:

  • Trending Instagram and TikTok videos can inspire you
  • Facebook groups – what are people discussing and sharing in relevant groups?
  • Twitter – what conversations are being had in our chosen niche?
  • Pinterest – search trends on Pinterest to what’s popular in your niche

Look for trending and new topics related to your chosen niche to help inspire design ideas.

Chat GPT

If you’re looking for some text-based designs for your print on demand products you can ideas from ChatGPT.

For example, you might have noticed that slogans are design-type that sell well in your chosen niche. You can ask ChatGPT for some slogan ideas in your niche, for example:

“give me 10 (your chosen niche) slogans for merch designs”

You’ll still need to ensure that anything the tool suggests is copyright free but it’s a great way to quickly get some slogan ideas. You can use Merch Informer to quickly check if a slogan is copyright protected.

Start things off on the right foot

Some things to keep in mind before you start creating designs:

  • Start your POD journey with sub-niches
  • Validate your chosen niche or sub-niche
  • Choose a high demand – low competition topic
  • Get inspired by high demand/selling products but do not copy
  • Do a combo of evergreen and seasonal designs
    • 50% evergreen designs that can sell all year round – consistent income
    • 50% on designs that are likely to sell in the next 1 – 3 months e.g. designs going into summer, Christmas, halloween, appreciation days, other holidays, etc.
  • Check for trademarks – tools like Merch Informer can help or do it manually
  • Have the right mindset, be patient – getting sales and finding out what performs best takes time and most importantly consistency. Those who stick with it have a much better chance of eventually being successful.

Print on Demand design tools and resources

Now comes the fun part – getting your print on demand designs.

Here are some of the best tools and resources for getting designs for your print on demand products:

Kittl

Kittl is a fairly new kid on the block but they’re already making waves, particularly in the print on demand space, with their easy-to-use tools and stunning design templates.

If you’re not a seasoned designer who has experience with software such as Adobe illustrator or Affinity Designer then you’ll love Kittl.

You can create complex designs in no time at all or simple but great-looking text-based designs too that are perfect for print on demand.

The tool is particularly strong when it comes to t-shirt designs and logos but they’re template library is growing rapidly so we’re sure there will be even more print on demand designs added. Watch this space.

Pricing:

  • Free account
  • Pro – $15 /month or $120 /year
  • Expert – $30 /month or $288 /year
  • Business – Custom pricing

Hannah Ebeling also recommends Kittl as a great place to find and create print on demand designs, as well as few other useful alternatives…

Hannah Ebeling

“As a print on demand seller it is important to make the biggest impact in the least amount of time possible, so I rely on a lot of tools that make designing products fast and easy.

I’ve been loving and using the design suite Kittl a lot recently because it has so many pre-made design templates that make creating new designs take literal minutes.

I also still love and use Canva. It’s so simple and a really accessible way for a lot of new print on demand sellers to get started.”

Note: If you’re thinking of using Canva, check out Hannah’s video on the best Canva fonts for Print on Demand.

Check out this video from Hannah that showcases all the awesome designs that you can create using Kittl, and just how easy it is:

Canva

No doubt you’ve heard of Canva, which is the ultimate online graphic design software. You can create an insane variety of assets with Canva and this includes print on demand designs.

It’s extremely easy to use Canva regardless of whether you’e creating simple text-based designs or more complex ones with multiple elements.

You can also do plenty for free with Canva, perfect if you’re just starting out on your print on demand journey, or if you’re on a tight budget.

A lot of people seem to be a bit confused as to what’s allowed when using Canva to create (and then sell) print on demand designs.

You should check out the Canva commercial usage page but essentially you can use any element from Canva as part of a unique design but you can simply use an element as is and then sell that as the design without any modifications.

Pricing:

  • Free plan: plenty of amazing tools and templates
  • Canva Pro monthly: $12.99
  • Canva Pro annual: $119.99

Juna recommends Kittl and Canva but has a few other design suggestions too…

Juna from Detour Shirts

“The different tools and resources that would best help you create those designs really depends on your skill level.

If you are not an artist then I would suggest you hire out a designer through Fiverr or Penji.

If you are a little more comfortable you could start with applications that have graphics in them like Canva, Kittl or Vexels.

You may be a very skilled artist or love to draw. In that case, I would suggest you draw your own graphics in your own style, which would make you stand out. You could do this with a pencil and paper and then scan it into your computer and trace over it with a vector program like Illustrator or Affinity Designer. If you prefer to draw on a tablet, like an iPad, then Procreate might be a good tool for you.”

Vexels

Vexels is another fantastic online design resource for print on demand sellers.

They have thousands of print-ready designs in a large variety of niches. If you have a paid Vexels account you can download these and either modify them or use them as they are on your POD products.

Their online t-shirt design maker is also very easy to use, and allows you to quickly and easily create great looking designs that you can sell on print on demand t-shirts (and other products too).

If you’re in need of inspiration you can check out Vexel’s recently added merch quote generator which can give you some great ideas for text-based designs.

With a paid Vexels subscription you get licensing rights to all the designs you download so there are no copyright headaches as a POD seller.

Pricing:

  • Monthly subscription: $9.99 – $89.99 /month
  • Annual subscription: $90 – $816 /year

Placeit

One of the simplest tools tools you can use to create print on demand designs is Placeit.

They have thousands of mech design templates that are very quick and easy to customize. You can also utilze their gigantic logo template library for print on demand designs too.

We cover this in more detail in this article: How to use Placeit with Printify & Printful.

Another compelling reason to use Placeit is that everything you create comes with a commercial license, so you can sell on any platform you want with no copyright issues.

Plus you can also create professional-looking mockups through their platform. They have thousands of mockup templates for a range of POD products including t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, posters, and many others.

Pricing:

  • Some free templates
  • Individual designs: $2.95
  • Monthly subscription with unlimited downloads: $14.95
  • Annual subscription with unlimited downloads: $89.95

Hire a designer

If you want to get some high-quality print on demand designs but you don’t have the time or skillset to create them yourself then you can hire people to create them for you.

Here are some great options for finding amazing designers to work with:

Create the designs yourself

If you’re creative and are a talented designer or illustrator you should consider creating your own designs for print on demand.

Here are some tools that you can use to create your own designs:

  • Adobe illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Procreate
  • Affinity Designer
  • Photopea
  • GIMP
  • CorelDRAW
  • Inkscape

Buy premade designs

You can also simply buy pre-made designs that are print-ready.

There are some sites like Vexels that are subscription based and allow you to download unlimited designs, and some sites where you can purchase individual designs.

Here are some good options:

Free image and graphics websites

There are plenty of free images and illustration websites that you can utilize to help you create awesome designs for your print on demand products.

All you need to do is search these websites, find images, graphics, and illustrations that are copyright free, and then incorporate them into your designs.

If you’re looking to boost your print on demand product sales then one of the best ways to do this is to use high-quality product images and mockups.

One of the best mockup generators is Placeit, and it’s the ideal tool to use in conjunction with print on demand services such as Printify and Printful.

In this article we’re going to show you how to use Placeit with Printify and Printful to help you make your product listings stand out, and more!

Let’s get to it.

How to use Placeit with Printify & Printful:

More sections:

Before we dive into the all the details, if you’re looking for unlimited downloads of thousands of high quality mockups that are perfect for print on demand sellers then you might be interested getting a discount for Placeit.

You can get 15% of your Placeit subscription by clicking the button below:

Why use Placeit for print on demand?

So why would you bother using Placeit for your print on demand store and product listings? It’s not a requirement but it really can help you make more sales.

We’ll focus on using Placeit mockups initially but we’ll touch on other parts of the product that you can use for print on demand a bit later.

So here’s why you should be using Placeit mockups:

Different viewpoints

Before you buy anything (particularly apparel and accessories) it’s likely you’ll want to get a good idea of how the product will look.

Using Placeit mockups gives potential buyers an idea of how the product will look in real life, and giving them several viewpoints or angles of the product is always a good idea to help convert them into paying customers.

Stand out from the competition

It can help you stand out from the competition. The majority of people will use standard mockups which definitely have their place, but using quality mockups from Placeit can help you stand out from the competition.

You can still use the standard mockups from Printify and Printful but we’d highly recommend testing out using Placeit mockups as the featured image in your product listing to see if it drives more clicks (and hopefully more sales).

Use models (+ creating a connection)

People connect with other people, so seeing images of people wearing a product can really help drive the conversion rate up.

Using Placeit mockups allows you to use models and environments (lifestyle images) that fit your target audience – e.g. an image for girls, mums, hikers, etc.

For example, this images of a mother and daughter together, a hiker out in nature, etc. Placeit allows you to choose models and lifestyle images that create a deeper connection with your potential buyers.

Seasonal products

If you create designs for specific seasons or holidays too such as Christmas or Halloween you can create great imagery for seasonal products too with Placeit.

Here are some of examples:

Use Case #1: Alternative mockups for product listings

The first use case for Placeit when it comes to using it with Printify and Printful as we’ve already touched on is as an alternative mockup source for your POD product listings.

We’re going to use Etsy to showcase how your Printify and Printful listings are published but the steps are very similar regardless of the platform that you’re selling on.

Here’s how to use Placeit mockups with Printify & Printful:

Step 1: Create a product listing

Create a product listing via your chosen print on demand provider – either Printify or Printful.

To do this on Printify follow these steps:

  1. Hover over ‘Catalog’ dropdown menu and select a product category
  2. Choose a product that you want to add to your store
  3. Click a ‘Start designing’ button next to one of the print provider options
  4. Upload your design and position/resize it
  5. Choose the product colors
  6. Click ‘Save product’
  7. Edit the product listing details
  8. Click ‘Publish’
  9. The product listing will be added to the draft listings tab on your chosen platform

Note: Uncheck the ‘Mockups’ option when you’re editing the product listing if you don’t want the mockups from Printify to show in your product listing.

If you’re using a platform like Etsy you can add your own custom mockup images from Placeit directly to your listing.

Keeping that box checked will automatically add the mockups from Printify to your product listing:

Here’s the steps to add a product listing on Printful:

  1. Make sure your Printful account is connected to your store (e.g. Etsy store)
  2. Go the ‘Stores’ tab via your Printful dashboard
  3. Click ‘Add product’
  4. Select a product to add to your store
  5. Add your design
  6. Choose the product color options, etc.
  7. Click ‘Continue’
  8. Choose your Printful mockups
  9. Edit the product listing details
  10. Edit the pricing information and click ‘Submit to store’
  11. The product listings will be added to your draft listings

Step 2: Look at what’s working for your competition

We’re going to continue using Etsy as the example platform.

To work out what kind of mockups you should be creating with Placeit for your product listings it’s important to see what’s already working for the competition.

You can input a search term into Etsy and get an idea of what’s ranking well for that search term, and what is selling in that niche.

Look at the type of imagery they use for their listings to help inform your own product listings strategy:

You can also go into a product listings to see what other images they’ve included which will help inspire your own listings.

You can see in the example below this shop owner uses very high quality images, as well as product videos and it’s obviously a listing setup that’s working quite well as that product was in 20+ baskets at the time of the screenshot:

Research several competitor listings and stores. You might find that the mockups from Printify and Printful work well in your niche or you might find that you need better quality or different kinds of images.

Either way, the research will show you what your featured image should be, what kind of product shots to include in the listing, and whether competitors are using videos or not. With this information you can head to Placeit to find suitable images (and potentially videos).

Step 3: Find matching mockups on Placeit

Now it’s time to find matching mockups on Placeit for the product you’re selling via your print on demand store and Printify/Printful.

You can find exact matches for some commonly sold print on demand products such as Bella+Canvas 3001 t-shirts which Placeit offers over 350 mockups for:

There won’t be exact matches for all your print on demand products but you can still find mockups on Placeit that feature very similar products that you can use in your listings as long as they accurately represent the product.

For example, you might be selling this tote bag from Printful:

You won’t be able to find any ‘EarthPositive’ tote bag mockups on Placeit but there are plenty of cotton tote bag mockups that look very similar to the product:

There’s even tote bag video mockups that are a great match for that product too (over 80+ templates at the time of writing):

The key is to find images and videos that accurately represent the product you’re selling, you don’t want to deceive your potential buyers.

Step 4: Create the mockups

We’re not going to go through the steps for creating mockups on Placeit in detail in this article (check out our article about Placeit mockups for that).

Here are the quick steps to creating mockups on Placeit:

  1. Go to the relevant mockup category page on Placeit
  2. Find a template(s) (that matches your product and popular listings on Etsy)
  3. Customize it
  4. Download it

Note: Make sure to match the color hex code from Printify/Printful to the color of the product in the mockup on Placeit.

You can get the hex code from Printify if you go to the product editor, click on product variants, and then hover over the color you want. A popup will appear with the color hex code that you can then use on your Placeit mockup to match it up perfectly:

Step 5: Make sure they’re the right size

The images on that you download from Placeit might not be the ideal dimensions for the platform you’re selling on.

For example, on Etsy your images should be at least 2000px wide and no larger than 1MB when it comes to the file size.

You can resize or crop the mockup images you’ve created on Placeit going to the ‘My downloads’ area on Placeit, then clicking on the Crop/resize option for the image you want to modify:

Then simply input your ideal dimensions and download the new version of the image:

Step 6: Add the mockups

The final step when it comes to mockups is to add them to your product listing.

You can’t upload custom mockups via Printify or Printful at the moment so you have to do directly via the platform that you’re selling on – in our example it’s Etsy.

Go to the ‘Listings’ tab in your Etsy dashboard and then select one of your recently added listings via Printify or Printful. They’ll be sitting in the drafts area which you can select from the right side of the dashboard interface.

Once you’re in the product listing you’ll see options to add photos and a video. In the example below we added a product from Printful that already contained some mockups, with space to add two additional images and a video:

Once you’re happy with the product listing you can save as a draft or publish to your store.

Use case #2: Size charts & other product listing images

The second use case that makes Placeit super helpful for print on demand sellers is to use it to create great-looking product size charts, guides, and other additional product listing images.

These are a really useful listing features that can help build trust with potential customers and boost conversions of your print on demand products from Printify and Printful.

Here’s how to create them on Placeit:

Step 1: Browse the templates

Go to this page on Placeit and browse the size chart designs, and you can can find shipping and returns image templates on this page.

Step 2: Choose one that fits your brand

Choose a relevant image for your product listing. You can modify them to fit the style of your store and brand.

Some of the templates might not work for you as they contain a mockup of a different product but there are some templates that can be fully customized:

Step 3: Customize it

Modify the template to fit with your brand and product (product image, sizes, colors, etc.):

Step 4: Download and add to your listings

Download your size chart image (resize it if you need to) and add it to your product listing.

If you’re using Etsy you can add it in the same area where you add the mockup images.

Step 5: Reuse it

Reuse the size chart template or other additional listing image for your other products to keep things on brand and consistent across your whole store.

All you would you need to is go back to that template on Placeit, modify it for the new product and download.

Use case #3: Merch designs

As a print on demand seller you can also use Placeit to create designs for your POD products. The best part about using Placeit is that everything you create comes with a commercial license.

Here’s how to use Placeit to create designs for print on demand products from Printify and Printful:

Step 1: Get inspiration

Etsy is a great place to get print on demand design or slogan ideas. You shouldn’t be copying anyone’s designs but you can definitely take inspiration from what’s already on the platform.

For example, if you’re in the hiking or outdoor niche you could search for “hiking t-shirts” on Etsy, and see what kinds of designs and slogans are being sold:

You can also use AI tools like ChatGPT to generate slogan ideas for your print on demand products.

Here’s an example for the hiking niche. I asked it for 15 hiking t-shirt slogan ideas and it gave me some that could work on t-shirts and other POD products:

Note: If you’re using Etsy for ideas and inspiration make sure to look at what is actually getting sales so you can prioritize what designs to focus on initially. Also, make sure to check that any slogans you use are actually copyright free.

Step 2: Go to the merch designs on Placeit

Now that you have some good ideas for designs and slogans, it’s time to head to Placeit to look for design templates that you can use.

Login to your Placeit account and in the search bar input the keyword that describes the designs that you’re after. For example, we searched for ‘hiking’ designs:

You can then filter the results further via the tags on the left side of the screen e.g. we chose to only show t-shirt design templates:

Depending on your niche there should be a decent selection of designs that are specifically designed for your chosen topic. Here’s what we got for hiking t-shirts:

Also, remember that a lot of these designs can be used on different types of products as well as t-shirts.

If you want even more design options you can search through the logo templates on Placeit, many of which are ideal for merch designs too.

Here’s an example – we searched for ‘hiking logo’:

Once you’ve found you’re ideal design, click on it and you will be taken to the editor.

Note: If you’re wanting to creating text only designs you can do this with most templates from Placeit, you simply need to hide the graphic elements in the design editor.

Related article:

Step 3: Customize it

Thankfully, the design editor is fairly simple on Placeit.

You can quickly modify the text, fonts, colors, etc. and if there are any elements of the design that you don’t want to use you can simply hide them or drag them off the canvas.

You can use some of the design inspiration and slogans you found in step 1 from Etsy and ChatGPT with your chosen design template on Placeit:

Step 4: Download it

Once you’re happy with your design it’s almost time to download it.

Before you do that you’ll want to check that the design looks good on the colors of the t-shirts and other products that you plan to sell it on.

You might even have to create a light and dark version of the design to fit all color variations:

The last step is to set it up so you download the design with a transparent background so it can be uploaded to the print on demand products on Printify and Printful with no issues.

To do that simply click the background color dropdown menu and select the no background option:

Now you’re ready to hit the download button!

Step 5: Resize it

If needed, you can resize the design with Placeit’s resize tool to make sure it will be okay for your chosen platform.

However, Placeit gives you large PNG file for your design template downloads so it shouldn’t be an issue when adding it to products on Printify and Printful or any of the print providers that they work with.

Step 6: Upload it

Upload the design to a Printify or Printful product listing – simply follow the steps from use case #1 – step 1 again.

Use case #4: Branding, social media & paid ads

The last Placeit use case that we’re going to highlight for print on demand sellers is to create brand assets, social media content, and potentially paid ad designs via Placeit.

Their templates can help you promote your brand and your products so you can sell more from your print on demand store connected to Printify or Printful.

Here are some of the top POD mockup categories on Smart Mockups:

Smart Mockups only falls slightly short in comparison to Placeit in a couple of areas: the number of mockup templates they have for most categories, and also the fact that they don’t offer video mockups either.

However, there is still plenty on offer for print on demand store owners. You can even turn you’re own images into custom mockups with Smart Mockups which is an incredible feature.

If you have a Canva account you can import your designs directly into your Smart Mockups account, alternatively you can use the Smart Mockups integration that let’s you create mockups in Canva

Example of a mockup from Smart Mockups:

With both platforms you can sell a range of print on demand products including t-shirts, hoodies, hats, mugs, tumblers, art prints, bags, and so much more.

#4 Mockit

In at number 4 we have Mockit which is a fairly new mockup generator with a good-sized library of mockup templates mostly for apparel print on demand products.

If you’re looking for simple, product-only mockups for your print on demand apparel designs then Mockit could be just the tool for you as that’s what they offer. If you’re after lifestyle imagery with models then you’re better off looking elsewhere.

Example of a mockup from Mockit:

Pricing:

  • Some free templates
  • $9: Monthly subscription plan
  • $79: Annual subscription plan

Mockup format:

  • Create in browser (upload your design, modify template, download as a JPG, PNG, PDF, or SVG file)

#5 Mockup Mark

Mockup Mark is also a relatively new online mockup generator (compared with Placeit and Smart Mockups) but they’ve quickly established themselves as a great option for print on demand sellers, particularly those selling apparel designs.

They have a solid range of mockup templates (including some free options) with a distinct look and feel that could be a great fit for your target audience, brand and print on demand designs.

As you can they have mockups for some of the most popular print on demand apparel brands but they offer the most when it comes to Bella+Canvas mockups. So, if you’re seeking out templates for those specific brands then you might find your ideal template on Mockup Mark.

The majority of their mockups feature stylish models so if that’s the look you’re after for your print on demand product listings you check out their library.

Example of a mockup from Mockup Mark:

Pricing:

  • Some free templates
  • $14.99: Monthly subscription with unlimited downloads
  • $119.88: Annual subscription with unlimited downloads
  • $299.99: One time for lifetime access

Mockup format:

  • Create in browser (upload your design, modify template, download as a JPG file)

#6 Creative Market

Creative Market is one of the leading design asset marketplaces, and they have plenty to offer when it comes to mockups for print on demand sellers.

Here are some of the main POD mockup categories on Creative Market:

Creative Market gives you the opportunity to buy mockup templates directly from talented designers, the only downside is that most of the templates are in a PSD format so you’ll need to have some knowledge of Photoshop or similar software to use them.

As a print on demand seller you’ll likely find t-shirt mockups (and other mockup types) for the brands you’re selling such as Bella+Canvas, Gildan, American Apparel, and many others. Most of the items are reasonably priced too!

Example of a mockup from Creative Market:

Pricing:

  • From $8 up to $600+

Mockup format:

  • Mostly PSD files – edit with design software
  • Some templates for Canva

FAQs

Some of the most frequently asked questions around print on demand mockups:

What is a mockup in print on demand?

When it comes to product mockups, which you will most likely be using for your print on demand store or product listings, mockups are digitally altered images that showcase how your design will look on a product (such as t-shirt) and/or how it will look in a real life environment.

They can be images of t-shirts, books, packaging, phone cases, tote bags, hats, and much more.

Here’s another example of a t-shirt mockup where we’ve placed a dancing astronaut design:

How do you make mockups for print on demand?

There are two main options.

The first is to use PSD mockup templates from websites such as Creative Market, Envato Elements, etc., and customize them in design software that you’re familiar with e.g. Photoshop.

Here’s a video showing you how to do that:

The second option is to use an online mockup tool, we already mentioned a few in this article such as Placeit and Smart Mockups but there are plenty more to try out.

First, you can use them in product listings to showcase how your products or designs look in a real-life environment, on a model, or targeting a specific lifestyle.

This helps potential buyers either visualize themselves using or wearing your product and makes it more attractive than the basic imagery that a lot of print on demand stores use.

You can also use mockups to promote your products via social media content. Using mockup images makes it super easy to create great-looking posts and stories for the various social platforms.

Lastly, if you’re running ads for your print on demand store, you can use mockups as part of the imagery for your ads.

What should you look for in a mockup for your print on demand shop or product?

Here’s what you should be looking for in the mockups that you use for your print on demand store:

Copyright – Make sure you have the required copyright and commercial to use your chosen mockup images. Sites like Placeit, Envato Elements, Creative Market, and Vexels make this simple for you.

Aesthetics – Use mockup images that fit with your brand, the products/designs you’re selling, and the audience that you’re trying to attract. There are so many options when it comes to mockups so it’s a good practice to be picky and selective.

Design skills – Do you have the skills and knowledge to use design software to create your mockups? If so great, if not stick to ‘easier’ options such as Placeit.

It is always a great idea to learn how to utilize design software such as Photoshop if you can!

Mockups are great way to show how your designs and products will look in a realistic and attractive way.

One of the best mockup generators around is Placeit’s. They have thousands of templates that you can use for a huge range of products.

In this article, we’re going to show you how to create mockups with Placeit, and how to utilize them effectively to promote your print on demand products.

Let’s get started.

Jump to a specific section:

Before we dive into the article, if you’re considering getting a Placeit subscription to access unlimited downloads of thousands of high quality mockups then use the button below to get 15% off the lifetime of your subscription:

What is Placeit

We won’t bore you with a huge explanation of what Placeit is in this article as there’s a good chance that you’ve already had experience with the tool.

In short, Placeit is a browser-based design tool that anyone, regardless of their design skills and experience, can use to create a range of design assets including mockups, logos, social media content, videos, and much more.

There are some free templates or you can purchase individual premium designs, alternatively you can purchase a monthly or annual subscription to Placeit that gives you unlimited downloads.

The articles below give you a more in-depth introduction and walkthrough of everything Placeit has to offer:

Why use Placeit to create mockups

Here are some of the main reasons you should be using Placeit mockups:

Images evoke a response

It’s important to use good visuals to promote your product designs.

People respond emotively to quality imagery, and having great images can go a long way to getting a sale or helping your products be remembered longer (so they might come back to buy later on).

Quality and consistent imagery can also help you develop a certain look and essence a memorable brand that people begin to trust.

Placeit mockups can go some way to helping you achieve this.

You can see a mockup image from an Etsy store below which is okay but the text design doesn’t sit quite right on the t-shirt, so we created a couple of mockups on Placeit that you can see below that we think could do a better job of promoting the product:

Mockups from Placeit:

Save time, money, and resources

You could hire models to wear your designs, or you could learn a complicated tool like Photoshop to make your own mockups, or simply use a browser-based tool like Placeit that has done all the hard work for you.

They’ve taken photos of thousands of products, worked with models of all backgrounds to wear/hold/use them, taken photos in different environments and settings, and created a tool that allows you to put your design on any of those images in seconds.

So, it’s a no brainer! You save time, money, and can focus on promoting your products.

Huge mockup library

Placeit has by far the most mockup templates on offer out of all the online mockup generators.

There are some great alternatives such as Smart Mockups but at the moment you won’t find a bigger mockup library anywhere else on the web.

Go beyond the standard mockups

Some print on demand platforms like Printful and Printify have their own inbuilt mockup generators.

The images they provide can be useful but often their mockup images aren’t the best. Placeit can provide you with additional mockups that are more engaging to help you promote your print on demand products and designs.

Below you can see an example of a standard Printify mockup for a Bella+Canvas 3005 t-shirt versus a mockup of the same product from Placeit.

We think the Placeit ones gives potential buyers a better idea of how the t-shirt will look and fit:

It’s super easy to use

The best part is that it’s insanely easy to create mockups on Placeit, and we show you the exact steps in the next section.

How to make mockups on Placeit

Creating mockups on Placeit is incredibly simple. Here are the steps to take:

Step 1: Go to your chosen category

Navigate to the mockup area on Placeit (this link takes you there) and use the filters on the left side to select the relevant mockup category.

For example, we’re going to choose ‘Tote bags’:

You can also simply input a search term into the search bar to find relevant mockups, or use the dropdown menu to find the relevant mockup category (although not all the mockup categories are available from the menu area):

The search bar option is particularly useful if you have a specific product in mind e.g. ‘Bella+Canvas 3001’ t-shirt:

Step 2: Choose your mockup template

To narrow down your search even further to find the perfect mockup you can use more filters.

For example, you can sort the mockups by ‘Best selling’ to see the most popular templates in your chosen category:

Or, if you have a specific model type in mind you can filter the results to show only relevant models. You can filter by gender, age, and ethnicity:

Once you’ve found your ideal template simply click on it and you will be taken to page where you can customize it.

Step 3: Customize your mockup

The customization options might be slightly different depending on the mockup template you choose but typically you’ll be able to change the product color at the very least.

Some templates allow you to add a background image or change the background color. In the template we chose you could change the product color, background color, or add/upload a background image:

If you’re creating a mockup for an existing product in your print on demand store, you can grab the color hex code from your print on demand platform and put that into Placeit so it will match up perfectly:

Now you can add the design that you want to see on the product by clicking the ‘Insert Image’ button (the button sometimes says ‘Drop File Here!’ too).

Placeit gives you the option to upload a design from your device, choose a recently uploaded design, or use a design that you created and downloaded previously on Placeit (Import from Downloads):

Resize and position the design so it looks how you want it to, and then press the ‘Crop’ button to confirm the design placement:

You can add additional design elements such as text fields and extra graphics by clicking the ‘+ Add’ button on the bottom left of the editor area:

Any new text or graphic elements will appear on the left side of the editor so you can customize them from there:

Once you’re happy with your mockup it’s time to download it. All you need to do is click the ‘Download’ button, and Placeit will produce a PNG file of the image for you. Easy as that!

Perfect mockups for print on demand

Whatever print on demand products you’re selling, there’s a very good chance Placeit will have a range of mockups that match your product that you can use to help promote it.

Here are just a few examples of mockups that are perfect for some of the products found on Printful and Printify:

T-shirts

Other apparel

Mugs & drinkware

Phone cases & grips

Bags

Art prints

The best thing to do with mockups from Placeit (or any other mockup source) is to check out the competition on the platform where you’re selling your product (e.g. Etsy) and see what kinds of mockups are being used by popular competing products.

Then find similar mockups from Placeit and test these out to see what works best for you. You can keep testing and over time you’ll have a solid set of mockups that you know work well with your product.

In this article, we’re going to take you through the step by step process of creating mockups using Printify’s mockup generator so you can create some quality promotional images for your print on demand products.

Let’s get started.

How to create mockups with Printify’s mockup generator:

  1. Choose your product
  2. Upload your design
  3. Download your mockup(s)

More sections:

Before we dive into the steps, if you’re looking for unlimited downloads of hundreds of high quality mockups that are perfect for print on demand sellers using Printify then you might be interested in using Placeit’s mockup generator.

We’d recommend Placeit as they have such a huge volume and variety of templates, including many for common print on demand products and brands such as Bella+Canvas.

You can get 15% of your Placeit subscription by clicking the button below:

Step 1: Choose your product

You can use Printify’s mockup generator without signing up for an account but we’d recommend doing it anyway as it’s free to do and you get a couple more features that you can utilize.

Once you’ve signed up for a free account, navigate to the product catalog and choose a product that you’d like to create a mockup for.

For example, we chose the Bella+Canvas Unisex Short Sleeve Tee:

If you’re looking to only create mockups for a particular product, all you need to do next is scroll down the page and click a ‘Start designing’ button for one of the print providers, and this will take you to the design editor.

Note: If you want to create a mockup in a particular color, make sure you click the ‘Start designing’ button for a print provider that offers that color:

Step 2: Upload your design

In the editor you can choose where you want to place the design on your chosen product, for example on our t-shirt we could choose to have the design on the front or the back of the t-shirt.

You’ll have different options depending on the product you’ve selected:

Note: Check out this article if you need some inspiration for print on demand designs.

Next up you need to upload a design that you want see in your mockup images you can select files from your device, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

Alternatively, you can choose a design from the Shutterstock library, create a new design via the ‘Custom text’ option, or use free elements from the ‘Graphics’ tab to make a new design:

If you click on the Shutterstock option, you’ll see a popup like this where you can search for designs from Shutterstock’s library to add to your product.

Note: The problem with using designs from Shutterstock is that you can’t get designs with a transparent background, so keep that in mind:

In the ‘Graphics’ tab you text elements that you can use, shapes, and also graphic such as plants, pets, patterns, and more that you can add to your product design for your mockups:

Clicking on the ‘Custom text’ option will add a text field to your product that you can edit, resize, and format it how you like:

You can also add multiple design elements (e.g. a graphic and text element) and whatever you add as your design you can save as template to be used in future product mockup designs:

To access your saved templates you can go to the ‘My templates’ tab and select them from there, you can also see previous design elements that you’ve used in the ‘My library’ tab:

Note: Again, you’ll need to be logged in to access your library and saved templates:

Once you’ve uploaded or created a design it’s time to choose a product color or colors for your mockup images.

You can select these by clicking the ‘Select’ button at the top right of the editor and choosing the colors that you want for your mockups:

Once you’re happy with your design and color settings you can now click the ‘Preview’ button at the top of the editor area, this will take you to a tab with your mockup images:

Step 3: Download your mockups

You should arrive on a page that looks similar to the image below, with your mockup image options on the right hand side, and color option below them:

You can select an image, and this will make it appear as the main image on the left side of the preview area, and you can also select a different color and this will reload all the mockups in that new color.

The last optional step is to add a mockup background. You should have the option to add a background image to any mockup that has a blank background in the preview area.

Note: You’ll need to be logged in to access this feature:

Once you’re happy with your mockup image you can now download it.

To do that simply click the download button at the bottom left of the preview area, and this will download a PNG file of your selected mockup image:

You’ll need to select each mockup and download them individually as there doesn’t appear to be a bulk download option at the moment.

Bonus step: Get even more mockup options

If you’re looking for more apparel mockups for your print on demand products, you should definitely checkout Placeit’s library. Here are some of the top categories for mockups of products that you’ll find on Printify:

In the design editor you can choose where you want to place the design on your chosen product, for example on our hoodie we could choose to have the design on the left chest, center chest, large center, and several other options (we chose ‘Large center’):

Note: Check out this article if you need some inspiration for print on demand designs.

You’ll then need to upload a design that you want see in your mockup images, or you can use text elements, clipart, or ‘Quick designs’ as the design featured in your mockup:

If you want mockups of your chosen product in different colors you’ll have to select these before you continue to the next step. You can see the color options on the left side of the design editor in the ‘Product’ tab:

Once you’re happy with your design and color settings you can now click the ‘Continue’ button, this will take you to a review page. From here you simply need to click ‘Save product template’:

Note: If you’ve chosen a product where embroidery is an option, and you have embroidery selected (rather than DTG) then you’ll have a button that says ‘Calculate price’ instead of continue.

Simply click on this, and then from there it’s the same steps.

Step 3: Go to your product templates

Navigate to the ‘Product templates’ tab in your Printful dashboard.

From here you need to hover over the new product that you just added so you can the three dots appear over the product thumbnail.

Click on the dots and then select ‘Download mockups’:

The next step is to choose one of the options Basic mockups or Custom mockups. We’ll take you through both options in Step 4:

Step 4: Choose your mockup option

There are two options when it comes to creating mockups on Printful.

You can either choose the basic options, which gives you set selection of mockups for your chosen product o the custom mockup option which allows you to create custom mockups in Printful’s mockup editor.

We take you through both options below.

Step 4 – Option 1 (Basic)

If you chose the basic option you’ll be taken to a screen like the one below (you’ll have different mockup options depending the product you selected):

From here you simply need to select the mockup images that you want to download by clicking the checkbox for your chosen mockups:

If you scroll down the page, you’ll see all the mockups that you’ve selected. Usually, there will be a version for all the color options you chose previously:

The last step is to choose the format in which you want to download the mockups in (either JPG or PNG), and then all that’s left is to click the ‘Generate mockups’ button which start the download.

You’ll get a zip file with all the mockups if you selected multiple images, or you’ll get a JPG or PNG image if you only chose to download one image:

Step 4 – Option 2 (Custom)

When you navigate to the custom mockup area, you’ll arrive on a screen similar to this (it will have different mockups based on the product you chose and colors, etc.).

If you chose multiple color options for your product, these will also appear below the main panel in the mockup generator:

On the left side of the mockup generator you have several options including the mockup style in the layers tab. This let’s you choose the product image that’s used in your custom mockup:

You have the option to add pre-made backgrounds to your mockup via the ‘Scenes’ tab. These are made of background images, props such as plants, shoes, and also shapes and gradients.

They’re also sorted into categories to make it easier to find the right one for you e.g. abstract, blooming nature, colorful, etc.:

If you’ve created any custom scenes and saved them, you’ll see them in the ‘My scenes’ section of the ‘Scenes’ tab:

You can build your own scenes by selecting items from the ‘Props’ tab, choosing a background option from the ‘Fill’ tab, and adding additional elements via the ‘Clipart’ and ‘Text’ tabs.

You can also upload your own design elements and grab them via the ‘Uploads’ tab too:

There are different customization options for each design element. You can go to the layers tab, select a layer, and the customization options for that element will appear above the mockup image.

For example, you can see the customization options for the text layer in the image below:

Once you’re happy with your mockup scene you click the ‘Continue’ button at the bottom right of the editor. This will take to a summary page where you can see a final preview of your mockups.

You can click ‘Edit mockup’ to go back to the mockup editor, and you can also save your mockup design as a scene to be used in future custom mockups too by clicking ‘Save mockup as scene’:

The last step is to choose the product colors that you want to download, and the format that you want for your mockup images (JPG or PNG). Once that’s done you can click the ‘Generate mockups’ button to download your mockup designs.

You’ll download a zip file if you have selected multiple images or just a JPG or PNG image if you only select one:
