To properly review each billboard mockup generator we scored them in four main categories:

To have a fair comparison of the different tools we used the same design with every billboard generator:
Mockup Generators
If you’ve never heard of or used a mockup generator before, here’s a quick explanation.
They’re simply online tools that let you easily put your billboard designs onto an existing image. This can be a simple rendering of a billboard by itself or an image of a real-life environment (e.g. a billboard on the side of a motorway).
Most online mockup generators are incredibly easy to use but the only downside is that you lose out on some of the customization options you would get if you used a tool like Adobe Photoshop.
However, there are plenty of tools providing quality mockup templates (such as all the ones in this list and our t-shirt mockup generators and book mockup generators articles) and they’re constantly improving, so you’re bound to find some quality billboard mockups that have everything you’re after.
#1 Placeit Mockup Generator
Placeit is an online design tool that lets you create a huge range of designs including posters, logos, videos, and a whole lot more. Their most popular product feature is still probably their mockup generator.
They have the largest selection of billboard mockups out of all the tools in this list, with over 90 at the time of writing. So if you’re looking to put an image onto a billboard Placeit should be your first stop.
What sets Placeit apart from the other tools in this article is not only the amount and quality of their mockup templates but the fact that you can even create billboard video mockups. Which is an incredible feature.
Customizing the mockup templates is also super simple – you choose a template you like, add your design, adjust the size and positions, and download. It takes no time at all.
Placeit even offers some free templates too, so if you’re on a tight budget there’s something for you too. As a billboard generator, you won’t find many better tools than Placeit.

#2 Media Modifier
Like Placeit, Media Modifier started life out as purely a mockup generator but has since expanded its offering to include a whole range of other design tools and templates.
Mockups are still their bread and butter though, and they have a good range of billboard mockups available. Currently, they have around 75 billboard mockup templates.
Like with most of the other tools on this list their billboard generator is very simple to use, you can have your billboard mockup ready to go in no time at all.
There are also a few features that Media Modifier has that the other tools don’t offer at the moment including offering you the ability to download your mockup files as a PSDs.
You can also choose to download your billboard mockup as a PNG or JPG file. Something that Placeit currently doesn’t offer (you can only get their templates as PNG files).

#3 Smart Mockups
Next up we have Smart Mockups, a tool solely focused on help people easily create good-looking mockups online.
They have a decent range of high-quality billboard mockups, including some free ones too!
If you have your own images of billboards that you want to turn into mockups that can be customized online then you can do just that with Smart Mockups. They give you the ability to create your own custom mockups, which is an awesome feature.
Smart Mockups has a few integrations that set it apart from some of the other tools on this list, including an integration with Canva that allows importing designs from your Canva account straight into SmartMockups.
So, if you create some billboard designs with Canva you can import them to your Smart Mockups account with one click.
Where Smart Mockups fall short in comparison to Placeit and Media Modifier is the number of billboard mockup templates they currently have on offer (around 30) which is a bit less.

#4 Renderforest Mockup Generator
Renderforest is an online design tool that gives you the ability to easily create a variety of things including logos, videos, and even websites. They also have their own mockup generator which has around 30 quality billboard mockups to customize.
The team at Renderforest team has put even put together some ‘mockup packs’ together to make it easy for you to find similar templates. They have a few with billboard mockups such as this one and this one.
With Renderforest it’s very easy to customize their billboard mockups. All you have to do is choose a mockup, add your billboard design, choose the colors, and download. Super simple.
A feature of their billboard generator that we like is that they show you how your design looks on similar mockups when you are customizing a template. So you can easily choose another template if your design looks better on that mockup.

#5 Mockup.Photos
When it comes to 100% free billboard mockup generators you won’t find a better selection of templates than what you can get on Mockup.Photos.
It’s a high quality free mockup generator that use images from stock image sites like Pexels and Unsplash to put together their mockup template library.
Like most online mockup generators the customization options are fairly limited but have everything you need to quickly and easily create quality mockup images.
Mockup.Photos even allows you to download very high-resolution images so as a 100% free mockup generator it is definitely worth checking out.

#6 PhotoFunia
PhotoFunia is a collection of online photo and mockup tools. Some that are just for a bit of fun, and others that are actually quite useful.
One of those being their billboard mockup generator which has a good number of templates you can utilize (around 60 at the time of writing).
The main issue with PhotoFunia is that their billboard mockup creator is a bit tricky to use as you have to guess what size the design or image you’re wanting to put into the billboard mockup should be.
So, this can result in quite a bit of trial and error to get your mockup image just right, which can be a bit frustrating.
However, everything on PhotoFunia is free to use which is great for those of you on a tight budget and who have plenty of time to get your images just right.

#7 Artboard Studio
If you like to have control over every single detail of your image and designs then ArtBoard Studio could be the product for you.
It’s one of the few online mockup generators that gives you the ability to customize almost every aspect of their mockup templates.
However, as a billboard generator it’s good but not amongst the top options as their current template selection for billboard mockups is realtively small – around 10 at the time of writing.
The templates that are available are good quality though and you can download some designs for free too!
If you’re looking for plenty of control we recommend checking Artboard Studio, however if you’re after a tool with a much smaller learning curve we recommend going with another tool from this list.

#8 Mockuper
When it comes to completely free mockup generators you won’t find too many better than Mockuper.
They offer over 800 free mockup templates in a variety of categories, including 5 billboard templates – which you can see in the image above.
Most of the 100% free mockup generators are fairly limited in the customization options that they offer but the team at Mockuper has included some great features which rival some of the premium mockup generators.
If you’re looking for a good quality billboard mockup generator, and you’re on a tight budget you should definitely give Mockup a try.

#9 MockupsJar
MockupsJar isn’t one of the best premium mockup generators as their range of templates isn’t as good as some of the other tools and the interface and user flow are a bit confusing.
However, there are some quality billboard mockups available on the platform. Currently, they have 9 billboard templates you can utilize for your billboard designs or images.
They also offer users the chance to try out the product for free as the first 20 downloads from the platform are 100% free. So, if you’re in need of a free billboard generator then it’s worth taking a look.
If you’re looking for a premium mockup generator we’d recommend looking elsewhere at the moment – i.e. Placeit or Media Modifier!

#10 MockupBro
MockupBro is another completely free mockup generator that has a really clean and user-friendly interface – particularly for a 100% free tool.
They have a range of free mockups from devices, books, t-shirts, and more but when it comes to billboard mockups they only offer one at the moment.
However, they do have some related mockups so it’s more than worth checking out what they have to offer, particularly if you’re on a tight budget.
As mentioned everything on MockupBro is 100% free to download, so if you need some quality free mockups then you might just find what you’re looking for on MockupBro.

#11 Big Huge Labs
Last up we have a bit of a wildcard in Big Huge Labs which is a website that has a whole bunch of free tools such as a badge maker, map maker, and of course a billboard mockup generator.
The tools are all very simple to use and offer a little bit of functionality, allowing you to create some pretty cool stuff.
You can put your image on a billboard with ease with their tool but they only have one billboard image that you can use so if you don’t like that image for your mockup you’ll have to look elsewhere.
Overall, it’s a decent free tool but you can find much higher quality mockups on some of the other billboard mockup generators.
